Hyoju, who simply got through each day without finding any reason to live, hears the news of her grandmother's passing. Despite having never met her grandmother, she is asked to come to her grandmother's place by the village chief.

On the last day of the funeral, the villagers perform a strange ritual in front of the mountain behind the house of Hyoju's grandmother and warn Hyoju never to enter the mountain. The reason is that everyone who has ever gone to the mountain has never come back. However, while cleaning up after her grandmother's funeral, she accidentally enters the mountain. Suddenly, a silver shadow escapes from her body. After realizing what happened, she rushes after the silver shadow, but the shadow disappears. Then, a mysterious man named Muyeong appears. He tells Hyoju that she will not be able to leave without her shadow, and she must find her lost shadow before the eclipse on the 5th night. If she fails to retrieve it, it will forever be lost in the forest. Muyeong offers to help Hyoju, who is determined to find her shadow by herself, as a favor. He asks Hyoju to teach him to make facial expressions, claiming that he is curious as to what his father's face meant when his mother passed away.

So the two spend the remaining nights and days on a journey to find Hyoju's shadow. As time passes, they develop feelings toward each other. However, Hyoju, who has to leave the forest, and Muyeong, who is part of the forest, fail to express their true feelings.

On the fifth night, when the eclipse is near, Hyoju and Muyeong find the silver shadow near a pond. Once Hyoju finally retrieves her shadow, she will lose all memories of the time she has spent in the forest. But Hyoju does not want to forget about Muyeong. Her shadow is in hand's reach, but she simply stands still. Then Muyeong, even though knowing his life will be in danger, enters the water.

살아갈 이유를 찾지 못하고 하루하루 시들어만 가던 효주는 어느 날, 존재도몰랐던 외할머니의 부고를 받는다. 마을 이장의 요청으로 효주는 난생 처음으로 외할머니의 고향으로 간다. 

​장례 마지막 날, 마을 사람들은 외할머니의 뒷산 앞에서 기묘한 의식을하며 효주에게 함부로 산에 들어가지 말 것을 당부한다. 산에 들어갔던 사람들은 모두 돌아오지 않았다는 이유였다. 하지만 효주는 3일 간의 장례를 모두 마치고 짐을정리하다 할머니의 뒷산에 무심코 발을 들인다. 그 순간 효주의 몸에서 은빛으로 빛나는 그림자가 빠져나간다. 이를 목격한 효주는 황급히 뒤쫓아가지만 은빛 그림자는 재빨리 달아난다. 효주앞에 무영이라는 신비로운 남자가 나타난다. 무영은 그림자가 없는 효주에게 그림자가 없으면 떠날 수 없다며, 다섯 번째 밤의 달가림이 있기 전까지 잃어버린 그림자를 찾아야 한다고 말한다. 만약 그렇지 못한다면 영원히 숲 속으로 사라지고 말 거라고 덧붙인다. 직접 그림자를 찾으려는효주에게 무영은 자신이 그림자 찾는 것을 도와줄 테니, 표정 짓는 법을 알려 달라고 말한다. 자신의 어머니와 헤어질 때 짓던 아버지의 표정의 뜻이 궁금하다면서.

그렇게 두 사람은 몇차례의 낮과 밤 동안 사라진 그림자를 찾는 여정을 함께 한다. 시간이 흐를수록 두 사람은 서로에게 호감을 느끼고, 감정이 깊어진다. 하지만 숲을 떠나야 하는 효주와 숲의 일부인 무영은 선뜻 서로의 마음을 밝히지 못한다. 

다섯 번째의 달가림이 곧 다가오는 순간, 효주와 무영은 물 웅덩이에있는 은빛 그림자를 찾는다. 그림자를 찾고, 숲을 떠나게되면 이 곳에서의 모든 기억이 사라진다고 했다. 효주는 무영을 잊고 싶지 않았다. 손만 뻗으면 되는데, 효주는 끝끝내 가만히 있는다. 그러자 무영은 그곳에 들어가면 자신의 목숨이 위험해진다는 것을 알면서도 물 속으로 들어간다.
