Interview at the morgue

The morgue. I open my eyes at the ringing of my mobile phone. The job interview I'd had at "Bio Clean Center" in the morning for an estate sale agent had led to an interview at the morgue. During the interview, the head of the company claimed that there were too many new recruits who found themselves unable to handle dead bodies and quit their jobs after one or two days. This is why he forced me to stay in the morgue, the place where dead bodies are stored. Successfully spending a night at the morgue, I was able to get the job of "estate sale agent of cleaning center."

Encountering past memories

My full-time job began with a bang when the head of the cleaning center was caught "relic stealing." He stole gold bars found under the bed of a lone lady who died alone in her house in Yeonhi-dong. I lost my job just 15 days after starting. But not long after, I started to operate my own estate sale business with the slow-witted, Kim Jeonggyu, my senior at the last place.

Business didn't start out as smoothly as I had hoped, and the work itself pushed me towards my past, which I had forgotten about. Detective Kang Dongcheol. A man connected to my past. He only reappeared in my life about a month before he committed suicide. But his reappearance led me to remember some horrible memories from my childhood, memories about my grandparents who died from potassium cyanide. Not only that, his daughter, Bora, appeared in my life, so the memories kept haunting me.

The unsolved mystery

When Jeonggyu brought in the box of business cards, I was truly the head of a cleaning center. And with that, I started my estate sale business, listening to and communicating stories of the souls of the dead. The hard life, the secretive life, the lonely life and the sad life. With a variety of stories about the other side of life coming to me through these communications, I started to learn more about life. Then one day, I found a lead that could prove detective Kang's death was not a suicide like Bora claimed. With more and more clues, I started to think that the death of detective Kang was actually linked to the death of my own grandparents.

영안실에서의 면접 

영안실, 울리는 핸드폰 알람 소리에 ‘내’가 눈을 뜬다. 오전 무렵 ‘바이오 클린센터’라는 업체에 유품정리사로 면접을 보러 간 일이 지금 영안실로 의 면접까지 이어졌다. 면접은 보러 왔으나, 시체를 보는 일이 괴롭다며 하루 이틀 사이에 그만두는 젊은 청년이 많았다는 이유로 사장은 나를 행려인 시체가 있는 영안실로 밀어 넣었다. 그렇게 영안실에서 하룻밤을 무사히 보낸 나는 ‘클린센터 유품정리사’로 취직하게 됐다.

과거의 기억과 조우하다 

고심 끝에 시작한 나의 정규직은 클린센터 사장의 ‘유품 먹튀’로 산산이 부서지고 말았다. 고독사한 연희동 할머니 침대 밑에서 발견한 골드바를 들고 튄 사장 때문에 취직한 지 보름 만에 나는 다시 백수로 돌아와야 했다. 하지만 우연찮게 클린센터 보름 선배이자 눈치 없는 놈, 김정규와 함께 유품정리 일을 시작하게 된다.

호기롭게 시작한 유품정리 일은 매 순간 순탄치 않았고, 잊고 살았던 과거로 나를 내동댕이치기까지 했다. 어린 시절의 기억과 연결되어 있던 강동철 형사! 그가 내 인생에 다시 등장하고 자살로 죽기까지 고작 걸린 시간은 한 달 남짓. 그는 내게 악몽 같은 어린 시절의 기억, 청산가리로 죽음을 맞이한 할머니 할아버지를 다시 떠올리게 했고, 그것도 모자라 자신 의 딸 보라까지 출연시켜 내 기억을 계속 흔들었다.

풀리지 않는, 풀어야 하는 수수께끼 

정규 선배가 파온 명함 한 통으로 나는 어느덧 클린센터의 사장이 되고 말았다. 그리고 영혼들의 사연을 듣고 그들과 소통하는 유품정리 일을 시작하게 됐다. 고단한 삶, 은밀했던 삶, 고독한 삶 그리고 슬픈 삶 등 다양한 삶의 이면들을 죽음 앞에서 만나며 차츰 인생에 대해서 배우게 됐다. 그러던 중 보라의 집요한 주장대로 동철 형사의 죽음이 자살이 아닐 수도 있다는 단서를 발견하게 된다. 그리고 이어 동철 형사의 죽음이 어린 시절 할아버지 할머니의 죽음과도 연결이 되어 있다는 짐작을 하게 된다.
