Overview

This is a non-fiction, ecological picture book that explains the life cycle of a red clawed crab, born in the sea and living in the mountains, through beautiful Korean water painting.

Book Intro

A red clawed crab!

Born in the sea but living in the mountains,

Red shell, and smiling face,

Stealing food from the kitchen!

This book is from an ecological picture book series that depicts the life cycle of plants and animals living in the water, on the land and in the forests of Korea.

A red clawed crab was very friendly to our ancestors as it was not afraid of people. People called it the cow dung crab or kitchen crab, watching them wandering in and out of the yard, kitchen, chicken coop and eating everything from cow dung, horse dung, to chicken dung. Unlike other crabs living in the sea, a red clawed crab is born in the sea but lives on the land. It starts life as a small water flea when it hatches from an egg, then goes through the naples and zoae larva stages. After more than a week as a zoae larva, it sheds its skin and becomes a megalopar larva that looks like a shrimp. After about a month of eating plankton, it finally grows into an adult crab. The young red clawed crab, if it has survived so long, goes out of the sea and on to the land. However, they are often killed by cars, making them hard to find nowadays. This book vividly and accurately captures the life and surrounding ecology of red clawed crabs from birth to growth.

Moreover, the book shows the basic ecology of red clawed crab at a glance, from its life cycle to the distinction between the male and the female, feeding and protection measures. And it also introduces similar but different clawed crab friends, helping children to learn the kinds and characteristics of crabs that are familiar to them.
