Jo's emotions are strong rather than unstable, and the sentences following such emotions are simple. But the natural aspects that arise from such are not about everyday life. Common scenes one might easily ignore take center stage when they go through the eyes and words of Jo. This movement into center stage is particularly noteworthy as it mostly takes place through the "words" of Jo.

Jo's words which sometime go weird transform the ordinary things in daily life into something strange. Paradoxically, such strangeness discovered in daily life  in turn exposes the strangeness of practices for our daily lives.  

However, this exposure should not be taken as a revelation. As poet Kim Eon said, "they drive us to hold different thoughts comfortably." Jo's poems are neither comforting nor discomforting. They offer the reader an experience of discovering the strange aspects of things we take for granted in our daily lives, through a wide yet bold voice and warm emotions.

시 읽는 즐거움을 회복시키다

감정의 균형을 잘 지키는 것은 조해주의 시를 대표할 만한 특징 중 하나다. 조해주는 일상에 산재한 드라마를 자신의 것으로 만드는 대신에 거리를 두고 지켜본다. 때문에 그의 목소리는 짐짓 무심하게 들리지만, 그런 일정량의 무심함이 자신과 대상을 다치지 않게 한다는 것을 조해주는 잘 알고 있는 듯하다.

조해주는 필요한 만큼만 말함으로써 독자들을 편안하게 다른 생각으로 움직이도록 만든다. 그런 의미에서 『우리 다른 이야기 하자』라는 제목만큼 이 시집의 특징을 잘 표현하는 말도 없을 것이다. 넘치지 않는 정확한 온도를 지키는 말과 정서가 요즘 시에 부족하다고 느끼는 많은 이들의 허기를 이 시집이 달래주기를 바란다.

평범한 일상 속에서 관찰되는

이상한 단면들

조해주의 정서는 불안하기보다는 튼튼하고, 그에 따르는 문장은 간결하다. 그러나 그로 인해 발생되는 자연스러움이 단순한 일상의 잔영에 머무르는 것은 아니다. 평범하게 넘길 법한 일상적인 장면도 조해주의 눈빛과 말을 입으면 일순간 시의 무대로 넘어온다. 그러한 무대의 이동이 조해주의 시에서 대개 ‘말’을 통해 이루어진다는 점은 눈여겨볼 만하다.

일상의 순간들이 나 또는 상대의 말을 통해 변화한다는 점 때문에 약간 엉뚱한 방향으로 향하는 조해주의 말들은 일상의 순간들 또한 기이한 모습으로 변화시킨다. 이때 관찰되는 일상의 이상한 장면들, 단면들은 역설적으로 우리 삶에 얼룩덜룩 묻어 있는 관습들의 이상함을 드러내기도 하는 것이다.

그러나 이 드러냄은 폭로의 형식을 취하지 않는다. 김언 시인의 말대로 조해주의 시는 “아주 편안하게 우리를 딴생각으로 몰아세”운다. 그의 시는 불편하지도 불가해하지도 않다. 조해주의 시집은 우리가 당연하다고 생각했던 일상 속에서, 낯선 단면을 엉뚱하고도 지혜롭게 들리는 목소리와 미온의 정서를 통해 발견하는 경험을 제공한다.
