If the door is shut, you can climb over a wall, can't you?

It's during the Joseon Dynasty, and there has been a bad harvest. Pusil who was born to the eldest daughter of a poor family, picks up a book titled The Biography of Yeogun by chance. She starts to learn her letters and become aware of the world after meeting Lady Hyojin. Yeogun, a virtual figure in the book created by the writer, is described through Pusil, who bravely faces class and position, gender, and discrimination, in a powerful yet touching way. Through the message that we must approach walls without hesitation, this book encourages us in the present to take a bold attitude toward the world.   

"Is the life of a woman worth the same as that of a man? Being born as a woman is a sin." - from the text

Pusil's family manages to live off of a porridge made from boiled grassroots and pine bark. But Pusil and her mother have to share the porridge with her father and brother, Gwison. Gwison is seven years old, but when he is sick, he hogs mom's breast milk which should go to the youngest baby, born six months ago. Pusil feels sorry for her youngest sister who does not even have a name. Moreover, when her mother leaves to work for a "yangban" family as a wet nurse to earn medical expenses for Gwison, she has to take care of the baby. Lady Hyojin asks Pusil if the situation is hard and Pusil replies, "Yes, it's hard. But I don't resent it." Pusil's thinks that a mind of resentment is a firmer barrier than the wall of discrimination and custom she faces.

"Gunja (virtuous person)" was a title only for well-behaved, righteous, virtuous, and highly learned man. By putting that title, which had only been used for men, to a woman, breaking taboo, the unknown writer of The Biography of Yeogun encourages Pusil to overcome the adversity she faces.

흉년이 깃든 조선시대, 가난한 집 맏딸로 태어난 푸실이는 우연히 『여군자전』책을 줍게 되고 효진 아가씨와의 만남을 계기로 글을 배우면서 점차 세상에 눈을 뜨게 된다. 작가가 창작한 가상의 책 속 인물인 ‘여군자(女君子)’는 신분과 처지, 성별과 차별에 부딪혀 나가는 푸실이의 모습을 통해 뭉클하고도 힘 있게 구현된다. 막힌 담 앞에서 주저할 것이 아니라, 힘차게 나아가야 한다는 메시지를 통해 현재의 우리에게도 세상과 마주할 담대한 자세와 힘을 품게 하는 작품이다.

흉년으로 풀뿌리와 소나무 껍질을 넣어 끓인 죽으로 끼니를 이어가는 푸실이네 집. 그나마도 어머니와 풀실이는 아버지와 하나뿐인 아들 귀손이에게 양보해야 할 때가 많다. 귀손이는 일곱 살이 되었지만 병치레를 하는 동안 태어난 지 6개월 된 아기 동생이 먹어야 할 어머니 젖을 독차지 했다. 푸실이는 아직 이름도 없이 '아기'로만 불리는 여동생이 딱하고 불쌍하기만 하다. 더군다나 어머니가 귀손이 약값 때문에 양반댁 젖어미로 떠나게 되자, 아기 동생을 지켜 내야 하는 건 온전히 푸실이 몫이 된다. 상황이 버겁지 않느냐는 효진 아가씨의 물음에 푸실이는 이렇게 답한다. "버겁기는 하나 원망하지는 않습니다." 원망하는 마음은 나아가지 못하게 한다는 푸실이의 당찬 마음가짐은 열두 살 소녀가 맞닥뜨린 차별과 관습의 벽보다 훨씬 견고하다.

"너도 나아가고 싶은 것이냐?"

"저는 다만 이 아이를 살리고 싶은 것입니다. 

그것이 나아가는 것인지는 모르겠습니다." -본문에서

'군자’는 예부터 행실이 점잖고 어질며 덕과 학식이 높은 사람, 남자에게만 불리던 호칭이었다. 금기를 깨고 남성에게만 불리던 호칭을 여성에게 붙임으로써, 더 나아가 ‘참된 사람’이 되고자 했던 『여군자전』의 보이지 않는 ‘지은이’는 ‘푸실’에게 자신 앞에 놓인 역경을 이겨낼 용기를 북돋아 준다.
