Artificial intelligence (AI) has been part of our lives for quite some time, but its presence was not explicitly felt until recently. In March of 2016, a Go match between the AI computer, AlphaGo, and the professional Go player, Lee Sedol, shocked many people. AI is regarded as mankind's last invention, as it learns and develops itself autonomously. So what is it, and where does its evolution end? What will the future of mankind look like after the introduction of artificial intelligence? This book provides easy to understand answers to these questions for the purpose of introducing the core technology that will lead the future, AI.
AI began with the Turing Machine, created by the mathematical genius and code breaker Alan Turing. Alan, who played a critical role in decoding the complex codes used by the German forces during World War 2, started to imagine a machine that could learn how to play chess by itself in the 1940s. The basic concepts of self-learning in today's AI began with him. What was impossible during Alan Turing's time became a reality 70 years later in the form of the Go champion, AlphaGo, and the AI doctor, Watson. Nowadays, AI is capable of not only playing Go or diagnosing patients, it is also entering fields that were conventionally considered exclusive to mankind, such as painting and song writing. A new era is opening in front of us. Of course the advancement of AI does not always lead to a bright future. Countless people are losing their jobs and military robots that can dominate or even eliminate mankind are potential issues posed by AI. This book claims that it is necessary to make efforts to explore the true essence of mankind and to establish sound ethical regulations corresponding to the advancement of AI.
