Jini, Jinny is the latest book by Jeong You-jeong, who is loved by readers around the world with her novels translated and published in around 20 countries, including USA and England.
Jini receives a request to rescue a chimpanzee on her last day as a zoo keeper in charge of apes and goes to the villa with her teacher, Professor Jang. Just as she is about to start the rescue, she realizes that the scared animal hanging from the top of the tree isn't a chimpanzee but a Bonobo. She feels faint, suddenly recalling a memory from half a year ago that she had tried hard to forget. But she soon gathers her wits and focuses on the rescue job on hand. During the rescue, the Bonobo gets shot with a tranquilizer gun. Jini sits in the passenger seat of Professor Jang's car holding the unconscious Bonobo in her arms. Professor Jang suggests that she name the Bonobo "Jinny." Just then, a deer jumps out on the road. The car skids as they try to avoid the deer then slams into the guardrail. Just then, something unbelievable happens. In this moment of confusion, the spirits of Jini and Jinny cross. Now, Jini must start her extremely difficult journey to return through this chaos to her real self. Through Jinny's unconsciousness, she gets to look into Jinny's past as if watching a movie, but Jinny's body can no longer be controlled. Her reason is paralyzed and cannot reclaim control about herself. At this time, Jini meets an unemployed youth, Minju, by chance and asks for help. Although he does not seem that dependable, she needs him to get her back to her real self. Only four days are permitted. Can Jini return to her real self? And can Jinny be brought back to life?
This novel freely crosses the boundaries between human and non-human, and life and death, and shows how humans, with our compassion and free will, can replace fears of death with the hope of life. Every sentence of this genre-bending novel, which is a coming-of-age-story, a thriller, and even a fantasy, will grab the attention of readers as soon as they open the book.
