Overview

This is a picture book that helps children learn the ecology of insects and become friends with them by playing with masks shaped like insects. Twelve children solve quizzes wearing different insect masks as if they are insects.

Book Intro

(English) Insect Mask Play

Just like people, every single one of insects has a unique appearance full of distinct characteristics. So, are their faces different as well? Well come to think of it, it seems like there's never an occasion to take a close look at faces of insects. We know what they look like, but their faces are not familiar.

Writer Ahn Eunyeong has paid close attention to the details of insect faces. She has read books to see their faces, to try having a conversation and to make close observations. This all started when she was raising a gypsy moth larva as a pet. When it left its cocoon, the face part of the cocoon separated from the body, and she thought it looked just like a “mask.” "Would it be great to show the faces of insects with a mask?,” she thought. With careful observation and a unique sense of exploration, the writer turned her idea into real insect masks.

The insect face masks have more character and features than we could ever have imagined. The faces of insects deliver information about what kind of food they eat and how they live their lives. They are a great source of new knowledge. But the writer hopes this will not become one of those “boring” lessons. Is there be a way to become friends with insects that is as fun as a game and exciting as an adventure? This is how the writer came up with her quiz game. A reader can wear an insect mask and go through a set of quizzes about the insect.

A reader can read through the book and play the quiz game with the children in the book. Each quiz contains various facts about the insect’s ecology. Answers can be found on the page following each quiz. Try to answer the quizzes after carefully listening to the questions. Eventually, you'll find yourself fully immersed in the game.

Once you reach the final pages of the book, try making a mask of an insect and experience becoming one yourself. This will help in understanding the life of the insects and in becoming friends with them.
