Overview

This book provides a variety of knowledge and information for children about waste, which is takin over the Earth.

Book Intro

Of all the numerous species living on earth, humans are the only ones that produce many different kinds of waste in huge amounts. It is also human waste that threatens the environment. Waste, the Trace Only Humans Leave provides a range of knowledge and information for children about waste that has been a big part of human history.

At the dawn of human history, there was waste, and  waste has always been produced wherever there are humans. Piles of shells from prehistory are dumps sites that show the lives of our ancestors. They ate the clams and threw away the shells, which accumulated over time. Broken stone tools and earthenware are valuable resources for us to understand the lives of people who didn't have letters. However, most waste is stuff we should get rid of to make life more pleasant. Before industrial development, the biggest issue was human waste. The streets of European cities smelled really bad. Then in the 19th century, a British plumber named Thomas Crapper developed the modern flush toilet. In the 20th century, flush toilets came into wide use and a modern human waste disposal system was established, both of which allowed people to have more convenient and hygienic lives. But at the same time, they caused extreme water waste and environmental pollution. The rapid increase in population and industrial development became a direct cause of environmental pollution. In the past, there was no dangerous waste that could threaten the lives of humans. But new types of material, like plastic, which doesn't decay, and harmful radiation, have produced new kinds of waste which now threaten the Earth. As seen in micro-plastics that flow into the sea, harm marine animals, and bring disaster to humans, waste has enormous effects on both our living environment and on us. This book emphasizes that efforts to manage and reduce waste as much as possible are essential to protect the Earth and all of us.
