The Dust of Death is Falling is based on the true story of a 18 year-old Chinese girl who developed lung cancer because of fine dust. It is an environmental picture book depicting the dangers of fine dust. This shocking story tells children that fine dust is an environmental disaster, practically a catastrophe.
The speaker "me" and Mayling are best friends in the same class at the same school. We are 8 years old and live at Jiāngsū Shěng in China. But one day, Mayling, who was healthy, fell down because of an illness. Her lungs were filled with fine dust. The polluted air where we lived made Mayling sick. The hospital said that Mayling had lung cancer. Mayling can't even breathe comfortably any more, let alone run around and play with me. I drew a picture for Mayling. I drew a clear blue sky, which we can't see where we live, and a healthy me and Mayling. I hoped she would get better after looking at my picture. But she didn't get the chance because she passed away before I could give her the present. And now, I am sick too. Because I breathed the same air as Mayling. But I don't want to die. I want to grow up healthy and become an adult. I desperately pray that that day will come. Can my wish of growing up healthy and turning 10 and 20 years old come true?
