Un enfant descend en glissant le long d’une corde fine. Il lâche la corde et saute de haut en bas. Il fait une glissade. Un autre enfant tombe en s’allongeant de tout son long. Il n’a sans doute pas peur.

Cette fois, il y a plus d’enfants. Ils s’amusent à rebondir comme sur un trampoline, montant haut et descendant bas. Un enfant saute, puis un autre, puis un autre, puis un autre. Les enfants jouent tout excités sans se fatiguer. Parfois, ils restent ensemble, parfois ils se mettent par deux, parfois ils se séparent et voyagent d’un endroit à l’autre. En tournant les pages du livre, le lecteur a lui aussi envie de plonger dedans pour jouer avec eux. Mais qui sont ces enfants ?

C’est un secret et je ne peux vous donner aucun indice pour vous aider à percer leur identité. Si je ne vous donnais rien qu’une petite piste, vous découvririez vite qui ils sont, donc je ne peux que vous inciter à faire preuve d’imagination et à deviner par vous-même.

Impossible de savoir également leur nombre, car ils sont trop nombreux pour être comptés. Nous ne savons même pas où ils vivent. Tout ce que nous savons, c’est qu’ils évoluent dans un espace invisible à nos yeux. Ces enfants courageux ne connaissent pas la peur. Ils aiment sauter de très haut, parfois ils dansent, parfois ils se balancent, et parfois ils font des acrobaties à couper le souffle, comme dans un cirque.

Ils aiment voyager. Il n’y a pas un endroit au monde où ils ne sont pas allés. Les vastes champs et les profondes vallées montagneuses sont leurs terrains de jeu de prédilection.

Parfois ils ont des couleurs, parfois non. Parfois ils sont cendrés, parfois bleus, parfois transparents. Parfois ils ressemblent à de minuscules glaçons scintillant au soleil, et parfois leur corps entier ressemble à un arc-en-ciel.

Savez-vous maintenant de qui il s’agit ?

This time there are more children. They bounce like on a trampoline, going up high and down low. One child jumps down, then another, and another, and another. Sometimes they stay together, sometimes they pair up, sometimes they split up and travel from place to place.

We don't know how many of these brave children there are, because there are too many to count. We don't even know where they live. They like to jump from great heights, but sometimes they dance, sometimes they swing, and sometimes they do breathtaking acrobatics, like in a circus.

They love to travel. There isn't anywhere in the world they haven't been. Large fields and deep mountain valleys are all playgrounds for them.

Sometimes they have colour, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they're ashen, sometimes blue, sometimes transparent, sometimes they look like tiny icicles glinting in the sun, and sometimes their whole body looks like a rainbow.

한 아이가 가느다란 줄을 타고 내려옵니다. 줄을 놓더니 높은 곳에서 아래로 뛰어내립니다. 주르륵주르륵 미끄럼을 탑니다. 또 한 아이는 몸을 길게 늘려 통통 떨어집니다. 무섭지도 않나 봅니다.

이번에는 아이들이 좀 더 늘었습니다. 아이들은 방방이에서 뛰놀 듯, 높이 솟았다가 아래로 떨어집니다. 한 아이가 뛰어내리면 다시 여러 아이가 통 하고 뛰어오릅니다. 수많은 아이들이 지치지도 않고 신나게 놉니다. 똘똘 뭉쳐 짝을 짓기도 하고, 흩어져서 이곳저곳으로 여행도 떠납니다. 그림책을 한 장 한 장 넘기다 보면, 나도 그 속으로 뛰어들어 함께 놀고 싶습니다. 그런데 이 아이들은 도대체 누구일까요?

이 아이들이 누군지는 비밀 중의 비밀입니다. 한 글자만 알려 달래도 알려 줄 수가 없습니다. 만약 알려 주었다가는 금세 누구인지 밝혀질 테니까요. 그냥 살짝 귀띔만 해 드릴게요. 누구인지 맞혀 보세요.

이렇게 씩씩하고 용감한 아이들이 몇 명인지는 아직 밝혀지지 않았습니다. 너무 많아서 헤아릴 수가 없거든요. 어디에 사는지도 모릅니다. 우리 눈으로는 볼 수 없는 곳에 산다는 것 말고는 알 수 없습니다. 이 아이들은 무서움이라고는 전혀 모릅니다. 높은 곳에서 뛰어내리는 놀이를 즐기지만, 때론 나풀거리듯 춤을 추기도 합니다. 그네를 타듯 흔들거리며 놀기도 하고, 서커스를 하듯 아슬아슬한 곡예를 즐기기도 합니다.

여행을 참 좋아합니다. 온 세상 안 가 본 곳이 없습니다. 넓은 들판도, 깊은 산골도 모두 이 아이들이 뛰노는 놀이터입니다.

이 아이들의 몸에는 빛깔이 있기도 하고 없기도 합니다. 때로는 잿빛처럼 보이고, 때로는 푸른빛으로 보이기도 하지요. 투명하게 보일 때도 있어요. 해가 비치는 날에는 마치 아주 작은 얼음알갱이가 반짝이는 것처럼 보이기도 하고, 온몸이 무지개처럼 보이기도 해요.
