(Russian) Пластмассовый остров

Образ пластмассового острова основан на реально существующем в океане огромном скоплении мусора, принесённого подводными течениями.  Морским птицам этот пёстрый пластмассовый мусор кажется чем-то необычным и интересным, однако для них он опасен и даже смертелен, ведь они могут запутаться в нём или проглотить, приняв за еду. Книга представляет парадоксальный взгляд на созданную человеком цивилизацию.

(English) Plastic Island

The picture book helps children and even adults to think about the environment.

Plastic made by mankind flows into the sea, floats along the ocean currents and forms an artificial island made of plastic. The island is said to be 14 times larger than the country of Korea. This book is a picture book featuring a story about this phenomenon through the eyes of a bird. The author stated that, as a mother, she wanted to talk about the environment with children after watching a documentary film about these plastic islands.
 While many people point out the issues caused by the plastic waste discarded in the ocean or in garbage bins in our daily lives, few people are aware of the potentially critical consequence as they should be.

 The plastic waste we discard never sinks. It floats on the surface of the sea and flows along the North Pacific Gyre to form a huge , oval-shaped island. This island was first formed in the 1950s when people started to use a lot of plastic goods. Plastic is a material that does not decompose, and it is commonly used in our daily lives. As it does not decompose, but only breaks down into smaller pieces, pieces of plastic float around the sea, like sponges, and enter the bodies of the fish which we later catch and serve as a meal on our tables. Plastic waste contaminates the sea and causes pain and harm to marine organisms.

 It is sad that there are multiple islands made of plastic waste scattered throughout the five oceans. What's worse is that there is no clear solution for this issue. The only things we can do are physically collect the plastic waste from the sea or prevent it from getting there in the first place by thoroughly collecting waste or reducing the amount of plastic waste being created. But regardless, it is important to think about  how we can make and recycle plastic goods.

 The author tells a paradoxical story about plastic as a product of human civilization, from the perspective of a bird living in the sea. Birds will slowly die off without even knowing what plastic is. This is what makes an adult embarrassed as they read this book to a child. But now is the time to seriously talk about the environment with children. This matter is very important and we, as adults, have a responsibility to teach future generations about the environment.

아이들과 함께 우리 환경에 대해 생각해 보는 그림책.

인간이 만들어낸 플라스틱이 바다로 흘러간 후 해류의 영향으로 바다에서 빙빙 돌고 있는 플라스틱 인공섬이 우리나라 면적의 14배가 된다고 합니다. 이 책은 이런 사실을 바닷새가 바라본 관점으로 지은 그림책입니다. 작가는 다큐멘터리에서 플라스틱 섬의 존재를 접한 후 아이들을 키우는 엄마로서 우리 주변의 환경에 대해 아이들과 함께 이야기를 나누고 싶었습니다.
바닷가에 버려진 쓰레기뿐만 아니라 일상생활 속에서도 버려지는 플라스틱 쓰레기에 대해 사람들은 문제점을 지적하지만 반대로 다시 사람들에게 닥쳐올 심각성에 대해서는 잘 모르고 있는 것 같습니다.

우리가 버린 플라스틱은 가라앉지도 않고 해류를 따라 떠다니다가 북태평양 환류 해역에 타원형 꼴로 모여 거대한 섬을 만들고 있습니다. 이 섬은 사람들이 플라스틱 제품을 많이 쓰기 시작한 1950년대부터 만들어지기 시작했습니다. 플라스틱은 썩지 않고 물질로 우리 생활 곳곳에서 흔히 사용하고 있습니다. 썩지 않고 그저 잘게 부서지기만 하는 플라스틱은 스펀지처럼 바다에 떠다니면서 많은 바다 생물들의 몸에 들어가고 결국 우리는 그 생물을 포획하여 우리 식탁에 놓게 되는 것입니다. 바다 위를 떠도는 플라스틱 쓰레기들은 바다를 오염시키고 바다 생물을 고통스럽게 하고 있습니다.

현재 이런 쓰레기 섬이 오대양에 산재해있다고 하니 참 슬픈 현실입니다. 하지만 아직은 이 문제를 해결할 방법이 없다고 합니다. 결국, 우리가 할 수 있는 일은 직접 쓰레기를 수거하거나 플라스틱을 바다로 흘러들어 가지 않도록 일상생활에서부터 플라스틱의 재활용을 철저히 하고 낭비를 없애는 일일 것입니다. 무엇보다 플라스틱으로 물건을 생산하고 다시 재활용하는 문제를 모두 함께 고민해 봐야 합니다.

작가는 바다에 사는 새들의 입장에서 플라스틱이라는 인간이 만들어낸 문명에 대해 역설적으로 이야기하고 있습니다. 아마도 새들은 플라스틱이 뭔지 모른 채 점점 생명력을 잃어가겠지요. 아이들과 책을 보면서 어른으로서 부끄러워지는 대목입니다. 이제는 아이들과 함께 우리의 환경문제에 대해 진지하게 이야기해야 할 때입니다. 이것이 다음 세대에게 알려줄 중요한 이야기이기 때문입니다.
