Overview

This picture book painstakingly depicts every aspect of the life cycle of a woodpecker instead of merely describing its external features.

Book Intro

The great spotted woodpecker builds a nest by pecking a tree thousands of times in a single day.
The sound of a woodpecker heard in early spring sounds festive when heard together with the sound of squirrels searching for acorns. When heard at a closer distance, you can hear the sound of a tree being pecked dozens of times. It's the sound of a male great spotted woodpecker building the safest nest possible and calling for females. The sight of a woodpecker pecking a tree thousands of times with its beak is enough to stop anyone dead in their tracks. Even the woodpecker's wood shavings floating in the wind are marvelously beautiful. This book tells the touching story of how male and female woodpeckers raise their young, going so far as to come between them and any potential harm.

The life cycle of a great spotted woodpecker as observed over an extended period by the author.
Kim Sungho, the author, built and stayed in a hut in a forest to observe the life cycle of a woodpecker over a two-month period. He carefully recorded its behavior, covering everything from which bird watches the nest at night to the number of times the young were fed in a day. Lee Jihyun, the artist, captured the black, white, brown, red, and orange colors of the great spotted woodpecker neatly and delicately in a uniquely Korean style. The feathers are depicted elegantly, as is the beauty of the four seasons of nature in which the woodpecker lives.

An appendix with a wealth of interesting woodpecker information
This book covers the full spectrum of a great spotted woodpecker life cycle, from hatching and rearing to fledging. Plus, a woodpecker's characteristics are explored in detail. The book is full of information about Korean woodpecker species and their ecology, enough to satisfy every curious child.
