Overview

It is a cheerful, cosmic world of storytelling by Lim Taewoon, one of the young leading Korean science fiction writers.

Book Intro

(English) Hold on a Minute While I Save the World

Hold on a Minute While I Save the World is a work where you can clearly feel the talent of writer Lim Taewoon, who maximizes the fun by combining various materials and themes without being bound by one subject matter or genre. The characters face unprecedentedly severe ordeals in their own lives, such as being threatened by extraterrestrial intelligence or meeting a lifelong rival, but the author does not leave them without agency. In the titular story, a wife, suspicious of her husband’s affair, maintains a resolute and cheerful attitude in the face of the great ordeal of the end of the world she unexpectedly faces. In “I’m Glad to be a Robot,” through the pure friendship between a robot created to be bullied and a human being, readers learn that in a relationship with someone, respect for the other comes first before an examination of factors that explain him or her. “Wind in the Teeth” raises the question of the customary and structural pressures imposed on women in Korean society through the eyes of an alien fighter tribe used to an extreme culture of the law of the jungle. In this way, the writer uses various materials to cast light on our reality in a world interspersed with social problems, structural discrimination, and gender conflicts.

If there is one difference from reality in the world of Lim Taewoon’s work, it is that there are times when a loser becomes a hero in any form, and there is also the exhilaration of the powerless challenging the powerful. Even if they don’t win, they don’t feel helpless or get frustrated easily. Even though they doubt the person next to them and sometimes turn their backs on themselves, they move forward, though sometimes shaken, without averting their eyes from reality, which must be the image we are seeking. In this way, Hold on a Minute While I Save the World will leave you with a hopeful ending and a pleasant echo, making you look forward to future stories from this cheerful and upbeat writer.

Recommendation

Hold on a Minute While I Save the World is a collection of stories that shows the writer’s unique story world, where he combines an extraordinary sci-fi imagination with common real-world backgrounds and characters. A deal has been made to adapt three out of six stories in this collection for film, and these are currently in the process of production. The Hankook Ilbo, 2021
