(English) The Silly Adventure of Sweet Potatoes 2

This is a sequel to The Silly Adventure of Sweet Potatoes 1 written by Saida (Korean title: Gogumaguma). In the first part, she demonstrated the fun of word play, and now those sweet potato friends are back with more word play. The way they talk sounds carefree, witty, friendly, and warm. Their lively rhymes will make you want to read the lines aloud. When children read those amusing lines, they’ll be able to improve their vocabulary and speaking skills, applying them to their real lives. 

Have you heard that sweet potatoes cause foul-smelling gas? The sweet potato friends in The Silly Adventure of Sweet Potatoes 2 emit gas, which produces a sound similar to their own names. Yet, their gas is not just stinky, it also has a secret, tremendous power. When one of their friends is about to fall into a hole, Bo-ok! Bo-ok’s fart saves the friend. When they climb a cliff, Bu-wang! Bo-ok! Bu-sik! Bo-roro! However high it may be, their joint gas takes them to the top of the cliff. When we acknowledge differences, respect each other, and cooperate with each other, there’s nothing we cannot achieve. We shine because we’re all different. When we get rid of our prejudice and love people around us, our friendship will shine a golden hue, just like the insides of a sweet potato.

말놀이의 재미를 전한 사이다 작가의 전작 『고구마구마』에서 ‘-구마’ 체로 이야기하던 고구마 친구들이 『고구마유』에서는 대한민국의 충청도 사투리로 돌아왔다. 느리지만 위트 넘치는 대한민국의 충청도 사투리 대사는 고구마 맛보다도 구수하고 정겹다. 운율이 살아있는 문장들을 읽다 보면 나도 모르게 큰 소리로 따라 읽고 싶어진다. 이렇게 말맛이 살아있는 대사들을 소리 내어 따라 읽고, 실제 생활에서 응용해 말하다 보면 문해력과 말솜씨가 쑥쑥 늘어날 것이다.

고구마를 먹으면 지독한 냄새가 나는 방귀를 뀐다는 말 들어본 적 있을까? 『고구마유』 속 고구마 친구들도 자신의 이름을 닮은 방귀를 뀌어댄다. 하지만 고구마 방귀라고 해서 다 지독하기만 한 것은 아니다. 고구마 방귀에는 사실 어마어마한 능력이 숨어있다. 친구가 구멍에 쏙 빠지려 할 때 보옥! 방귀를 뀌면 구할 수 있다. 절벽을 오를 땐 모두가 힘을 합쳐, 부왕, 보옥, 부식, 보로로! 방귀를 뀌면 아무리 높은 절벽이라도 오를 수 있다. 다름을 인정하고 서로 존중하며 협동하면, 이 세상에 이뤄내지 못할 것은 없다. 서로 다르기에 모두 빛날 수 있는 우리. 고구마의 황금빛 속살보다 더 값진 것은 편견 없이 모두를 존중하고 사랑하는 황금빛 우정 아닐까요?
