This book is an anthology by professor An Daehoe, a Chinese classics scholar and master who interprets classics in a precise and profound manner. The author selected the best 7 writers of the late period of the Joseon Dynasty and translated their essays meticulously and added concise explanations. Huh Gyun, Lee Yonghyu, Park Jiwon, Lee Deokmoo, Park Jega, Lee Ok and Jung Yakyong introduced in this book are writers who brought a wind of change to the literary circles of Joseon which were centered on ancient documents that sought to produce politics, philosophy and morality in a normative and orthodox writing style. They argued that the restraints of forms of old documents restricted even the life and emotions of the changing times and that the essays of the new age should be free from the restriction of forms and contents.
This book shows the essence of the best essays that depicted an aspect of the vivid and specific life, an inner side of intellectuals and the movement of social dynamics with a focus on essays of the best writers who brought about a big change to literature from the 17th century to the 19th century. Their essays are sometimes brisk, sometimes difficult, and sometimes unfathomably profound and sharp. Therefore, their essays will bring empathy and resonate with modern readers familiar with everyday writing through social networks and blogs.
