Overview

This picture book vividly describes the life of Neolithic people several thousands of years ago based on petroglyphs of Bangudae Terrace located in Ulsan, and tells readers of the historical meaning and values of the Bangudae petroglyphs, Korea’s National Treasure No. 285.

Book Intro

This story begins with Gilsang, a flute player engraved in the Bangudae petroglyphs. Gilsang represents Neolithic people who managed their lives by adapting themselves to the wild, barren natural environment. The author wanted to show the strong aspect of the Neolithic people through Gilsang, who is young but courageous and vigorous. The episode of whale hunting, which is the peak of the plot, is based on the scenes of whaling engraved in the Bangudae Petroglyphs, evidencing the dauntlessness and bravery of the ancient people. Due to the construction of the Sayeon Dam in 1965 to help supply drinking water, the rocks on which the petroglyphs are carved are flooded and only revealed when the water level gets low. This periodic flooding and revealing causes the rock art to be rapidly damaged.

The author hopes that this book could help children enjoy an imaginary trip to the Neolithic era long times ago and realize the value of the national treasure.
