The 20th century was an era like no other, one full of rich experiences that occurred at a rapid pace. This was also the era of the belle epoch as well as an age ripe with the fruits of various innovations in science, technology, politics, culture, and the arts. At the same time, it was also a century of terrible wars and the rise of unbelievable greed that not even the leaders of the industrial revolutions and the bourgeoisie revolutions could have ever imagined. It was an era that ended with a terrible wake-up call.
And yet, now that the 20th century is officially over, we must ask ourselves whether it is truly left in the past, and whether it has any bearing on our present. When we look around us, we see plenty of evidence to the contrary, that in fact, the 20th century is right here with us today! From the font that we’re using in this essay, to the chair that we’re sitting on right now, to the architectural styles that adorn the buildings we're in, to the tiramisu cake in refrigerators that we’ve saved for later, to the single malt whiskey that we’ll have as part of our nightcap before we go to bed tonight… All these things were either first introduced in the 20th century or put to proper use in that century. (And in fact, I would venture to think that many of you reading this right now are also from the 20th century.)
Perhaps, we can call the 20th century the era of cultural turbulence and varied ideas in human history; the period some would recall as a memorable nostalgic time; the period some would never wish to go back.
A number of masterpieces that have/have been created during the 20th century remain everlasting classics, icons of culture, and beloved work around us. In this book, we can find 20 different kinds of masterpieces that represent the 20th century, and each iconic masterpiece has its own story -- Kim Jayhoon made these brilliant stories alive by writing and illustrating them with his own characteristic wit and sophisticated illustrations in Dear 20th Century.

Kim Jay Hoon
(English) The author is a cartoonist, writer, and illustrator. He is especially popular for his ability to repurpose text-based knowledge into interesting and intuitive comic books. He graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Hongik University and studied visual design and cultural sociology at the Yonsei University Graduate School of Communication Studies. He has taught illustration and creative writing at Seoul Women’s University and Hongik University. He was the artistic director of the TV series Olympus Guardian and has contributed many cartoons to the Joongang Ilbo. His publications include the Amazing Discovery series, The Design, Scientists, Rivals, and more.
(Indonesian) Ia adalah seorang kartunis, penulis, dan ilustrator. Ia populer akan keunggulannya dalam memproses ulang pengetahuan jenis teks menjadi kartun yang intuitif dan menarik. Ia lulusan Sekolah Tinggi Seni Rupa Universitas Hongik dan mempelajari desain video dan sosiologi budaya di Sekolah Pascasarjana Komunikasi Universitas Yonsei. Ia pernah mengajar ilustrasi dan menulis di Universitas Wanita Seoul dan Universitas Hongik. Ia menjabat sebagai sutradara seni dari kartun televisi dan menerbitkan beberapa kartun kebudayaan pada penerbit surat kabar 《JoongAng Ilbo》. Buku-buku. yang Ia tulis antara lain, seri 《Amazing Discovery》, 《The Design》, 《Para Ilmuwan》, 《Rival》, dll.
