Book Intro

Introverts is a collection of 10 short stories written by Choi Junghwa, who has been active in the literary circle. Her sensitive and sharp observations on introverted people who exude anxious vibes in a seemingly perfect world have created witty and credible stories.

After reading her stories, the readers may find their previously tranquil lives uprooted to an extent. The characters in her stories have acute senses and suffer from unstable relationships due to their inabilities to take care of their own feelings. Sometimes, they are absorbed in one thought that seems unimportant, and sometimes they go to extremes due to having failed to mend their relationships damaged by some incomprehensible reasons. The protagonist in Shoes feels that a woman who comes over for a housekeeper interview is trying to take her place. In Dentures, a woman begins to ignore her husband who was once perfect but now wears dentures after losing his six front teeth in an accident. In Red Apples, man worries about his friends becoming aware that he and his girlfriend are in a contractual relationship and the woman strives to remove their suspicions by making up lies. In Tattoo, a father is confused by the fact that his teenage daughter is pregnant. In My House Is Getting Bigger, a timid guy tries to find a way to swap his house with his neighbor’s, who lives in a small room. All of these different characters from these different stories have a sense of inferiority, guilt, and a victim mentality that make people around them feel uncomfortable (from the commentary by literary critic Kang Kyeongseok). Yet, their behaviors may resemble our own or remind us of our inner selves that no one knows.
