Walking Down the Alley

All children can think about is to get home as quickly as possible, throw down their school bags, and play with their friends. But the alleyway leading home seems a long way for the children. Some children pet a cat, and some children stand in front of the shop to decide whether or not they will buy some sweets. Some play hopscotch and move along.

When children get home, they throw their backpacks into their rooms and run to the spot where they promised to meet their friends- without even giving their mother a glance. The children play at an empty area in the neighborhood on snowy winter days. The sound of calling for children echoes throughout the streets: “Come and have dinner, brother!”

As most people live in apartments nowadays, this sort of scenery is disappearing. Instead of playing with friends, today’s children finish their days by attending cram schools instead of having fun at the playground. Advancing quickly in your studies and getting ahead of others has become a virtue. Now we are living in a world where we monitor one another like surveillance cameras. The author misses his childhood friend and finds the warm voice of his mother, as well as the warm love that his grandmother gave him.

We hope this story can become an opportunity for children to travel back in time and experience the leisure and relaxing atmosphere that was once felt back during those days in the alleys.

아이들은 빨리 집으로 가서 책가방을 던져두고 놀 궁리를 한다. 그런데 아이에게 집으로 가는 골목길은 참 멀기만 하다. 새끼 고양이가 예뻐서 쓰다듬기도 하고, 가게 앞에서는 군것질거리를 살까 말까 고민도 한다. 누군가 그려 놓은 사방치기를 하고 또 발길을 옮긴다.

아이는 집에 도착하자마자 엄마 얼굴도 보지 않고 책가방을 방에 던져두고 친구와의 약속 장소로 뛰어간다. 한겨울 눈이 오는 동네 공터에서 아이들은 신나게 논다. 해가 저물자 골목 여기저기에서 아이들을 부르는 소리가 동네에 울려 퍼진다. “오빠, 엄마가 밥 먹으래!”ㅌ

아파트 문화에 젖은 지금은 이러한 풍경이 사라지고 있다. 아이들은 놀이보다는 학원을 전전하며 하루를 마감한다. 빨리 가고, 앞서는 것이 미덕이 되어 가고, CCTV로 서로를 감시할 수밖에 없는 각박하고 위험한 세상이 되어 버렸다. 작가는 순수했던 어린 시절 친구를 그리워하며 엄마의 목소리를 찾아내고, 할머니의 따스한 사랑을 기억해 낸다.

이 책이 아직도 남아 있는 골목길에서 아이들과 잠시 시간 여행을 하며 여유를 느끼는 계기가 되기를 바란다.
