Overview

This book tells the story of a man and a woman—both suffering from a sense of loss in the face of death—who newly discover the meaning of life through each other. In a meticulous and sensitive style of writing, the author captures the essential question of literature that seeks light in darkness.

Book Intro

Jeong-an is a conservation scientist whose job involves putting together broken fragments of pottery and restoring paintings tarnished by the passage of time. Ironically, although he restarts time for such artifacts, he remains gripped by anxiety that his time will come to a halt.

One day, Jeong-an is given the task of preserving and processing a mummy that has been transported from an excavation site. After removing dressings and accessories from the mummy, he sends it to be displayed at a special exhibition. At the exhibition, he runs into a woman. She is a civil servant secretly dispatched by the government to combat the soaring suicide rate. Although not so hung up on life herself, she takes her responsibility of preventing other people’s deaths seriously. When she was little, she grew up under a stepfather whose violence went unaddressed and a mother who’d led an unstable life. As a result, she lives in a bleak world stuck in the boundary between life and death—only driven by her obsessive fear of being left behind.

As soon as Jeong-an starts talking to the woman staring desperately at the cloth that once covered the mummy’s hand, he feels the principles of his life fall apart. The woman before him seems to have crossed over from the world of the dead, her face fraught with fatigue and despair. Jeong-an hands her a flyer about his upcoming talk on the special exhibition. Following that brief encounter, she leaves the exhibition hall.

Some time later, she turns up for the talk. She feels the urge to protest when Jeong-an glorifies death using a refence to a particular pattern on a Korean traditional jacket that shows a bird pecking at a caterpillar. She faces scenes of death every day, and to her, there’s nothing beautiful about death; death is nothing but a cruel catastrophe. The man who restores excavated artifacts is obsessed with death, while the woman tries her best to endure scenes of death every day. What will their encounter bring about?
