Book Intro

White Horse

This is a terrifying and beautiful Gothic thriller that begins when women come to know everything, asking questions that cut through the narrative of women of all generations: Why did women have to live with feelings of nauseous love and hatred? How can some women live never really knowing?

Kang Hwa-gil is a writer who exquisitely novelizes the problem of hatred and violence inflicted upon women through the language of thrillers and opens the doors to women-centric thrillers in Korean literature. Through the use of dubious narrators, Kang's works reveal unexpected turns after amplifying the anxiety and fear of those who are unsure of the situation in which they find themselves, captivating readers with an energy that can only be felt in her novels.

With White Horse, Kang's female characters are now transforming into all-knowing narrators. After grasping their own situations for survival, a giant structure that subtly suppresses women through rumors and gossip, unjust perceptions and customs, and physical threats becomes clear in their now broader vision. The moment Kang's characters sense this structure, which appears and then disappears like a ghost, a different sense of suspense begins to unfold. Knowing that everything oozes through the elaborate composition of the novel and gradually worms into the reader's mind, a more intimate tension is conveyed.

In White Horse, Kang goes one step further from her critical mind and reveals her determination as a writer to rewrite, in her own way, the words that restrain women. The title of this novella, alluding to the image of a prince riding a white horse, is not only a reference to G. K. Chesterton's famous poem but also to the music of Bob Dylan and Taylor Swift.  How will the meaning of these words be represented in Kang's novel? Continuing this work of reinterpreting existing stories with her own meaning, Kang is leaving an indelible impression on the world of Korean literature. Readers will be able to experience the joy of reading White Horse, a novel that will surely become a classic in the female thriller genre.
