Overview

A boy, the main character of the book finds out that he is a descendant of a dragon. The book cutely and lovingly portrays the boy's struggle to control his mind, realizing that when his emotions fluctuate, rains or even floods arrive.

Book Intro

The boy was about four years old when he started to think he might be a descendant of a dragon. Once when his mother and father were arguing, he heard his father say, "Ah, how did I marry a half-human half-dragon person like that?" (Page 8). Later, the boy saw scales on his mother's back, cementing his conviction. The boy becomes convinced that he is descended from a dragon after checking that it rained every time he went on an exciting picnic from the meteorological agency' s record.

One day after he became a high school student, something unexpected happened to the boy. Seeing a girl for the first time, he felt as if he'd been struck by "85 million volts" (page 44) of lightning. From that day on, heavy rain poured continuously from the sky. Suffering from the pangs of love, the boy is worried that he might flood the neighborhood and endanger the people around him. What should he do? Can he safely save the neighborhood from the heavy rain? The boy's father is in a hurry to hide his son's identity, thinking that if the boy's special abilities become known to the world, people might use him for bad purposes. Although not happy with his father, he understands. The boy starts learning scientific principles and gradually learns to control his mind by reading books and dramas. His growth process is consistently and pleasantly depicted with Kwak Jae Sik's unique humor and warm gaze. The novel The Strange Story of a Dragon Descendant reminds us of the mind of an adolescent, metaphorically referred to as gusts of wind. This is a story that any young person who has been shaken at least once with some uncontrollable feeling can empathize with, and all because of that first love that began as an electric shock.
