(Japanese) 誰でもやたらに呼ばれることを拒否する名前のない野良猫と、あらゆる誤解の中で死の鳥と呼ばれるカラス...ある日、ふと彼らに会った鳥籠の中のオウムカルスはその瞬間からうごめく人生の本能と自分に対する深い悩みに陥ります。そしていよいよ!カルスは自由と自存感のため、死も覚悟し鳥籠を抜け出すことになるが...今カルスはどのあたり飛んでいるでしょう...？

The poem "Yanya" (演雅), by Huang Tingjian, has the following phrase: "Once a parrot spoke the human language, it was imprisoned in a cage." The story starts with this phrase. A parrot is one of the most beautiful birds, arguably one of the most beautiful animals on Earth. As it is also intelligent and capable of speaking like a human, how can people not leave this creature alone? Parrots are now caught and caged by humans. Their strong points have ironically brought them the misfortune of living in a cage. The protagonist of the story, a parrot named Carus, also lives in a cage. One day, Carus meets a nameless stray cat. The cat lives a life of hardship on the street. Nonetheless, he refuses to be called by his name. And he also meets a crow. He lives his life eating rotten food suffering from prejudices, but he is responsible enough to take care of his old parents. And the weird conversation with a toy bird... To Carus, all of these encounters become a burden. From the conversation he has with the toy bird, he realizes his identity. From the conversation with the stray cat, he understands the instincts that come from hardship in life. And from the conversation with the crow, who he used to consider inferior to him, he gets to know the meaning of death. Afterwards, Carus looks back at the life he was so complacent with, being raised by humans and living inside a cage. Carus starts to think about what his instincts are and finds himself in panic, torn between his identity and his dignity. Carus starts to refuse the food his master brings him and to cause conflicts with other parrots. Then one day, Carus decides to escape, giving up everything he has had in his life so far. But this escape does not guarantee safety, and he might even die in the process. Even so, Carus continues on with his escape, determined... What lies ahead of Carus are dark rain clouds and strong winds as well as eagles... and gunshots from somewhere. How far does Carus make it? And what becomes of him?

중국 북송 시대의 황정견의 [연아]라는 시에 이런 구절이 있습니다. “앵무새가 사람 말을 하자 새장에 갇혔네.” 이 시어에서 이 그림책의 이야기는 시작됩니다. 앵무새는 조류는 물론이고, 이 지구상의 생명체 중에서 가장 화려하고 아름다운 동물입니다. 게다가 영리하고 사람 말도 잘하니 어떻게 사람들이 가만둘 수 있을까요? 그렇게 앵무새들은 사람에게 잡혀서 새장에 갇히게 된 것입니다. 아이러니하게도 이러한 앵무새의 남다른 장점이 오히려 앵무새의 본능인 하늘을 향한 날갯짓과 자유를 박탈당하는 불행을 가져오게 된 것입니다. 이 책의 주인공인 앵무새 카루스 역시 새장에 갇혀 사는데, 어느 날 문득 이름 없는 길고양이를 만나게 됩니다. 정처 없이 떠도는 고단한 삶이지만, 그래서 더욱더 자신의 이름이 함부로 불리기를 거부했을까요‥? 그리고 썩은 음식을 먹으며 갖은 오해를 받지만, 늙은 부모까지도 모시며 꿋꿋하게 자유로운 삶을 사는 까마귀, 그리고 장난감 새와의 불가사의한 대화…. 카루스에겐 이들과 만남이 버겁기만 한데‥ 장난감 새와의 대화에서는 자신의 정체성을, 길고양이를 통해서는 꿈틀거리는 삶의 본능과 고뇌, 그리고… 자신들과는 비교도 할 수 없을 정도로 하찮게 여겼던 까마귀를 통해서는 죽음까지도 알게 됩니다. 그때 이후로 카루스는 사람들에게 길들며 새장 안의 삶에 스스로 안주하고, 자신의 본능이 무엇인지? 이미 오래전에 잃어버린 자신의 정체성과 자존감에 혼란을 겪으며, 고뇌하기 시작합니다. 그 순간부터 주인이 갖다주는 먹이도 거부하며, 다른 앵무새와도 갈등을 겪습니다. 그리고 이제, 카루스는 지금까지의 모든 것을 거부한 채 탈출을 하려 합니다. 그러나 그 탈출은 그 어떤 안전도 보장받을 수 없고, 심지어는 죽을 수도 있습니다. 그러함에도 카루스는 죽음을 각오한 탈출을 하는데… 카루스를 반기는 건 검은 구름과 비와 태풍과 독수리들… 그리고 어디선가 들려오는 총소리… 카루스는 어디쯤 갔고, 어떻게 되었을까요…‥?
