A picture book that lets you experience what you see when you enter a bus

In the author’s previous work, she showed readers what they could see looking out of a bus window. In her current book, On the Bus, the author affectionately describes the people and the scenery inside the bus. On the Bus is a book that makes readers think about themselves, their environment, and other people while they wrap up their day. On the Bus is a project that lets readers think about each of the people on the bus and the relationship between people and their surroundings. The delicate drawings add depth, so when you slowly turn the pages it feels like you are on an actual bus. When you open up the pages it looks like a miniature theater, allowing you to enjoy reading a picture book in a new way. By using the subject of a bus to maximize what a book can be, by making it multi-dimensional, this work opens up new possibilities for picture books. So today ends this way, what mountain should we hike up tomorrow? Next stop is going home from school. Should we go after we have some rice cake (tteokbboki)? Beep beep, next stop is leaving work. Next stop is returning home. Today was good. It was full.

Nam Yoon-Leaf
(English) Author Nam Yoon-Leaf has loved buses since she was young. When the author sees the expressions and eyes of the people on the bus, she wonders how their day was. Sitting by folks who sometimes doze off, Nam imagines each of their stories. We accompany the author as she doesn’t just pass by the passengers, but rather watches them with warmth and smiles as she goes home. The author’s first book, Bus, was selected by American Illustration 37 and was awarded distinguished merit at the 3X3 Picture Book Show in 2018. What could be called a sequel, On the Bus was chosen to be part of the 2018 exhibition “Un-Printed Idea” at the Hyundai Museum of Kids’ Books and Art, where it was praised by museum attendees.
