Overview

A long-awaited full-length historical horror novel from Korea's foremost expert on the zombie genre Jung Myungsub, promotion panelist for high-profile IPs including Train to Busan and World War Z.

Book Intro

One of the few genre fiction career writers in Korea, Jung Myungsub has made a name for himself penning historical mystery, non-fiction history, and full-length children's novels while also taking on roles in teaching, field surveying, broadcasting, and academics.

While the word "zombie"originates in voodoo beliefs, the concept of zombies -- the dead coming back to life -- exists in every culture. In this novel, Jung draws inspiration from the zombie-like creatures referenced in the Assorted Writings of Yongjae, a Joseon dynasty book of folk traditions and culture by scholar Seong Hyeon. By placing these creatures against a backdrop of real history, Jung breathes realism into ancient lore. Specifically, Night of the Broken Moon focuses on the fall of Korea's beloved Goguryeo dynasty, retelling the story with an undead flair.

The land is beset by macabre creatures that feel no pain and seek only death

Only on the Night of the Broken Moon can the horde be repelled.

Seeking to revive the fallen kingdom of Goguryeo, the warrior Sehwal leads a group of men on a search for their national hero: Yang Manchun. Lord of the fallen Ansi Fortress, Yang Manchun kept Goguryeo strong through the turbulent coup of Yeon Gaesomun and the invasion of the Tang Emperor Taizong.

Sehwal's quest leads him to Mangwolhyang, a misty valley where the old lord supposedly lives in hiding. But upon reaching their destination, Sehwal and his men are ambushed by mysterious monsters that shrug off swords and spears. With the strange creatures and a band of Mohe tribe assailants at his back, Sehwal narrowly escapes the thick mist and enters Mangwolhyang, where he finds fellow Goguryeo folk living in peace, as though nothing had ever gone wrong.

About the Author

Choung Myung Seob

(English) Choung Myung Seob first released Jeokpae, a historical detective novel in two volumes, in 2006. Since then, he has been producing various other works in multiple genres including novels and educational books. In the past, Choung was an office worker. Then he became a barista and made nice cups of coffee. Professional writer is the third job Choung has had in his life. He is interested in telling a story that is not popular but important to know, rather than a well-known story. Books he has written for children and teenagers include Aro, the Boy Who Prints, Jikji; A Girl from Tsushima Island and The Birth of a Great Detective.

The author has previously worked for a conglomerate, and then a barista before becoming a professional writer. He believes his writing shines most brightly when he tells stories about cryptic or vanished places that people do not know about. He was the winner of 1st Jikji Literary Award in 2013 and was the recipient of New Creator Prize at the 21st Busan International Film Festival in 2016.
