What do grandparents mean to children? Grandpas and grandmas always give great love to their grandchildren. Grandchildren are never afraid, not even of their mom and dad's scolding, when they are next to their grandpa or grandma. Grandpas and grandmas are reliable and comfortable and are always on your side. But what would it be like to live with just your grandparents, but not your actual parents? In this book, author Hwang Sunmi looks into relations between grandparents and grandchildren through the unique story of Gahun, the grandson, and his grandmother.
In Grandma's Strange Shadow, Gahun behaves like an adult. He says it's okay not to have any friends and acts arrogant. But in reality, he pays very close attention to relationships with friends. He thinks it's a relief that he doesn't have a mother nagging at him but once in a while he feels like all his energy has been drained. Of course, his grandmother acts as a reliable support, but the thought that his grandmother might leave him too after his grandfather's death makes him insecure and life even more difficult. This book portrays in detail the process of understanding each other as family members while experiencing various incidents through the story of a dignified but still young 12-year-old Gahun and his grandmother with secrets.
