Overview

Resilience originally means the power to return to an initial position. In psychology, it usually means the positive power that overcomes ordeals or hardships. The author introduces examples of people who have conquered difficulties through resilience, and provides research results on improving resilience that have been carried out over decades. In addition, the book enables all readers to diagnose their own level of resilience and help to strengthen it.

Book Intro

Resilience is the most topical concept among research themes in positive psychology because it's a mysterious inner power of humans which helps them stand up again after getting knocked down. Positive psychology began with the revelation that psychology had been focused only on treating pathologies. Dr Martin Seligman, known as the founder of positive psychology, argued that we also needed to give normal people a psychological boost.

Professor Kim Juhwan has been researching resilience for a long time. He was one of the main researchers for Unanswered Questions: 7 Secrets of People Who Overcame Despair, which aired on SBS, meeting people faced with huge ordeals such as an unexpected accident or a business failure: Professor Lee Sangmuk of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Seoul National University became completely paralyzed after a car accident, Woo Jeonghun was a star street dancer until he became paralyzed from waist down in a car accident, and Ryu Chunmin operated a BBQ restaurant with annual sales of 5 billion won before the IMF crisis and outbreak of the mad cow disease left him 10 billion won in debt. But all of them made surprise comebacks, not succumbing to their great trials. How could they overcome such hardship? What kind of power did they have? Professor Kim introduced a new, astonishing concept called "resilience" live on air, demonstrating through brainwave tests, etc., that people who overcame hardships had much higher and firmer resilience than ordinary people. People's interest in "resilience" exploded after the program aired. In this book, six elements of resilience are listed and detailed methods to develop resilience are suggested. About the Author

Kim Juhwan



At present, Kim Juhwan (M) is a professor of Communication at Yonsei University. His main research and lecture topics include inner communication, meditation, the heart muscles, communication abilities, resilience, the effects of positive emotions, human communication, speech and discussion, persuasion and leadership, and neuroscience. He majored in Politics at Seoul National University and the graduate school of the same university, and has a MA and PhD in communications from the University of Pennsylvania. He received an Italian government scholarship and studied Semiology under Professor Umberto Eco at the Università di Bologna. Before coming to Yonsei University, he was a professor of communication at Boston University.
