This book is a story about a grandfather who always carries rice with him.
- Book Intro
-
Bonggoo's grandfather is nicknamed Grandfather Rice because he carries rice in his bag and uses it to stick things together. When he finds a hole in the sack of rice, or when the kids' soccer ball gets ripped, he solves the problem with rice. It may not be a perfect solution, but Grandfather Rice certainly has his own way. Bonggoo is displeased with his grandfather. He doesn't understand why he uses rice when there are many other adhesives out there.
"Why does he use rice instead of all other things?" you may wonder too. Yet, the author does not offer a detailed explanation as to why he uses rice. Instead, there are subtle hints in what he and Bong-goo say. For Grandfather Rice, rice is a source of warmth that connects even invisible things together and helps people get through times of hardship. That's why he tries to repair and reconnect things that are broken. The simple honesty of kind-hearted Grandfather Rice adds warmth to this humorous story.
