Overview

This book makes us consider things we forget or overlook.

Book Intro

Spring Child is the story of a boy living in Spring Village. All children in Spring Village have a spring attached to their back. The more they wind their spring, the faster they get things done. The protagonist always winds his spring all the way because he wants to get ahead of others. One day, he runs into a little boy who does not have a spring yet. The little boy becomes curious as to why he moves so fast and with whom he competes. Then the little boy says something strange. He says that you can still have fun without being fast or winning a competition with others. After considering this for a bit, our protagonist furtively removes his spring. Guess what happens next! He starts to notice things that he failed to see when he was rushing all the time.

People often talk about slow living, but we still carry on with our hectic lifestyle. There's so much to do and not enough time. And so we always feel impatient. As competitions intensify, quick thinking and prompt action become more important than ever. There is an increasing emphasis on tangible results rather than process. Children's daily lives have much in common with those of grown-ups. From early morning till night, we rush towards something breathlessly. Constantly worried about getting behind or losing, we do not have the peace of mind to slow down and look around. However, the faster we run, the narrower our perspectives and minds become. That means we can easily trip over a small obstacle.

About the Author

Yoo Myeongkeum

(English) Drawings have been the favorite thing for Yoo Myeongkeum ever since he was a little child. Attracted to the wonder of picture books, Yoo currently enjoys her work as a picture book writer. Yoo created The Clockwork Child based on the pleasures she couldn't recognize when she was in hurry but realized as she decided to live a slower life. Books Yoo has authored include Let's Play, Rain!, The Clockwork Child.

'Mom, you nag too much!' my child told me one day. I thought I was giving love and attention to my child, but I guess it was nothing more than nagging. With the hope that children will listen to what their mothers have to say as a form of love, I wrote this book.
