Book Intro

Wind and the Moon

This book illustrates George MacDonald's beautiful poem The Wind and the Moon. The Wind gets jealous of the Moon that shines brightly in the night sky. The Wind is displeased with the Moon for observing him. The Wind feels as if he were being watched. The Wind says to the Moon, "I will blow you out". No matter how hard the Wind blows, the Moon does not budge. One day, the Moon disappears. The Wind excitedly boasts about making the Moon disappear. But soon, the Moon comes back and shines brighter than ever. The Moon pays no attention to the Wind's loud talking.

How did the author Lee Ji-sook come up with the idea for this picture book by reading the poem written by George MacDonald? While reading George MacDonald's poem, she probably sympathized with the Wind complaining about the bright Moon. The Wind reminds us of children feeling at their most triumphant. The author conveys the meaning of the original in the story but makes it easier for children to understand. The scene with string instruments conveys the image and sound of the Wind. The use of lithography vividly depicts the subtle changes in the mind of the Wind and the tension created by his anger. The dynamic pictures feel as if they were moving. Rather than merely offering further explanations, this book takes us deeper into the story.

Those who stand out from the crowd often become objects of envy. People berate and despise them even though they've not bothered or harmed anyone, just like the way the Wind hates the Moon in The Wind and the Moon. The Wind claims the Moon keeps staring at him, but in fact, the Moon is only shining brightly in its place. No matter how desperately the Wind blows, the Moon doesn't even hear him. Just like the Wind, do we perhaps get angry and point a finger of blame at someone out of misunderstanding?
