The Home of the Heart is a picture book jointly created and first published in South Korea by South Korean author Kim Heekyoung, South Korean publisher Changbi, and Polish illustrator Iwona Chmielewska. An art gallery curator and a picture book author who has developed Braille picture books for children both with and without visual disabilities, Kim completed the text based on her aesthetic viewpoint and experience of communicating with youngsters. After reading it, Chmielewska was inspired to complete consummate illustrations that amply embody the philosophical message of the text. Thus born as a fruit of the planning capacity of a publisher and an author in South Korea to move and communicate with an illustrator in another country, this book well demonstrates the possibility of literary accomplishments beyond cultural and linguistic barriers through the medium of a picture book. At the 2011 Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the work won the grand prize in nonfiction, an unprecedented feat for South Korean publications. In their evaluation, the jury extolled the volume as an “elegant poem,” a book that “do[es] honor to children’s literature,” acknowledging its literary quality and finesse.
