Dear My Left Hand

Where would be the busiest parts of our body in a day? For sure, it depends on people, but they might be ‘hands’, which do the most tasks in our daily life. All day long, we use our five fingers in our hands almost all the time. In this book, the ‘hand’, which used to be part of the main characters, now becomes the main character itself. This book, titled ‘To My Left Hand’, is a picture book, showing the movements of hands from the first page to the last one. 

The left hand and the right hand….. Hands are the familiar parts of our body that everyone can easily sympathize with. The writer of this book talks about all kinds of relationships by using ‘hands’ as the main character. Some people are close to each other while sticking together all the time. However, they don’t really talk to each other about how they honestly feel, and finally become estranged. Others discuss whose fault in arguments and keep misunderstanding each other. 『왼손에게』는 첫 장부터 마지막 장까지 오롯이 손의 움직임을 따라 손만 보여주는 그림책이다. 왼손과 오른손. 누구나 공감할 수 있고 모두에게 친숙한 ‘손’을 주인공으로, 작가는 모든 관계에 대해 말한다. 가장 가깝고 친해서 늘 옆에 있는 사이지만 말없이 참다가 골이 깊어지기도 하고, 잘잘못을 따지며 싸울수록 오해만 생기는 그런 수많은 관계들. 문득 떠오르는 사람들이 있다면 마음에 담고 책장을 넘겨 보자. 물론, 책장을 넘기는 것도 손의 몫이다.

어딘가 할 말이 있는 듯 연필을 꽉 쥐고 등장한 주인공은 오른손이다. 그리고 바로 왼손을 향해 참았던 억울함을 와르르 쏟아낸다. 숟가락질, 양치질, 가위질, 빗질까지 전부 자신의 몫이었다는 오른손의 주장은 무척 공감이 된다. 떠올려보면 어떤 행동이든 오른손이 먼저 움직이기 마련이니까. 정교하고 어려운 일일수록 더 그렇다. 그렇다고 왼손이 먼저 움직이는 일이 아예 없는 것은 아니다. 보통 손에 크림을 바르거나 액세서리를 착용할 때만 얄밉게 오는 것이 문제일 뿐. 그런 두 손에게 어느 날 매니큐어라는 공평한 기회가 주어진다. 직접 매니큐어를 발라 본 사람이라면 누구든 알 것이다. 양쪽에 똑같이 바르는 것이 얼마나 어려운 일인지 말이다. 깔끔하게 칠한 오른손과 달리 벌벌 떨면서 다가온 왼손의 솜씨는 삐뚤빼뚤 엉망 그 자체. 오고가는 말과 손짓에 점점 감정이 격해진다. 두 손은 오랜 시간 쌓여온 감정들을 잘 풀어갈 수 있을까?

작가는 갈등의 끝에서 줄곧 오른손을 바라보던 독자의 시선을 잠시 왼손에게 돌린다. 과연 왼손은 어땠을까? 그 단순한 질문이 문제를 명쾌하게 해결한다. 오른손과 왼손을 떠나 ‘늘 혼자만 고생하며 섭섭하다가도 상대가 어려울 땐 가장 먼저 달려가는 나’와 ‘아무도 알아주지 않아도 묵묵히 노력하지만 모든 일이 마음처럼 쉽지 않은 너’만 남기 때문이다. 이 이야기를 읽고 잠시나마 떠올렸던 그 사람의 입장이 되어 보자. 결말이 꼭 용서나 화해는 아니어도 좋다. 때로는 진심 어린 말 한 마디로도 해피엔딩은 완성되니까.
