Book Intro

The Rules of Pencil Wrestling

They didn’t start to play this game because they wanted to. At least Yejun didn’t. Suchan kept begging them to play Pencil Wrestling. Yejun didn’t like how Suchan sometimes pretended to be close when he teased him every chance he got, but he felt good after he beat Suchan in Pencil Wrestling. The desire to win slowly welled up inside as Yejun thought of crushing Suchan. Suchan was smart and he even liked solving math problems, but he was having a tough time these days because his mother was all over him and because of stress from cram school. Suchan was a kid who was only satisfied when everything went his way, but he ended up losing his pencil to Yejun. Not just once or twice, but strangely he lost every time he played against Yejun. So now he was determined to win. Suchan tried changing the rules of the game as he pleased, and to fight back with a weird pencil he made himself. Hana, the new kid at school, was outgoing and kind. She soon made friends with the other kids and even the timid Yejun opened his heart to her. Meanwhile, Suchan won all the kids’ pencils like the Spanish Armada, and tormented the pencils he collected. Unable to tolerate this any longer, Hana challenges Suchan. Hana emerges victorious and gets Suchan to promise that he will not treat the pencils roughly. She then hands out the pencils she won to the other kids. One day, an unexpected incident occurs and Suchan ends up getting seriously scolded for it. Thinking it’s all because of Yejun and Hana, he decides to seek revenge. After forcing a win in Pencil Wrestling, Suchan causes the two kids to suffer a ridiculous punishment. But it is Suchan who ends up isolated. By chance, Suchan gets the courage to apologize to Yejun, and Yejun, who receives an unexpected but sincere apology, finds his hardened heart grow soft. The pencils become another friend connecting the children together.
