The Summer of a Mole
A friendly saying by grandma opens the beginning of the summer in a long time. In the forest where a mole family lives, many animals are ready for the summer vacation. The mole also leaves his boring work – digging the ground- behind, and heads towards somewhere for vacation. Then, he meets his first destiny under the shade of a tree. He thinks he is sitting on the ground, but it turns out to be the back of a turtle. The sweet mole has decided the sea is today’s destination as the turtle is accompanying him to help him on his way home safely. He has postponed digging the ground for vacation, but he still needs to dig the ground to head toward the sea. He is somewhat hesitant to volunteer what he is not good at, but he works up the courage for the turtle. When you read this book, you will imagine the mole waiting for a bus near a snowball in the winter and then, you will smile while realizing how considerate the mole is.
Since they begin to dig the ground, their journey becomes such an adventure. They dig around anywhere and come up at strange places, saying, “I’m sorry”. Their surprise visits are presented rhythmically three times in a row. Their journey gets bigger and faster, and finally, the joy explodes in the end. They are not good at finding a way or digging the ground, but they also feel excited by having each other as a company. Where is the sea by the way? Their cheerful journey then gets quieter when they have to be separated. They have become a good friend to each other, but now it’s time to go their way home. Then, some other friends join in the journey, and they get to have an unexpected ending. Perhaps, those other friends might be adults who have protected the world of moles all the time.
Readers, who haven’t noticed the truth of the turtle until now, may laugh out after reading a cute twist. The turtle and the mole didn’t know each other and had different personalities, but they were united as one. Their valuable friendship glitters in the summer night sky.
