This is a collection of stories by Baek Soorin, who began her career with When Ghosts Appear being released in Consonants and Vowels in the fall of 2010 and followed up with Lying Practice, which won the 2011 Annual Kyungghyang Shinmun spring literary contest. This collection contains nine stories written with faith and a passion for novels. Included are stories that reflect Baek's desire to represent obscure people on the fringes of society, help rediscover their identities, and tell interesting stories of humanity.
Baek's two works, When Ghosts Appear and Lying Practice, show her career starting points and the way she fundamentally pursues the possibility of and will toward communication. The Missing Potatoes exhibits her delicate verbal sensitivity through episodes that arise from a simple word change. Also included is When the Night Blooms, a story about a man who loses his ability to speak after passing by a woman performing a one-woman protest and his wife who witnesses his change.
