Why does a baby elephant wander alone?

Wakoongu, a 11-year-old boy from Kenya, lives in a town where many people grow corns. However, they all have to worry that elephants always ruin their corn fields. One day, Wakoongu discovers a baby elephant after school who visits the corn field in his town. He finds it weird a baby elephant is far from its mother and wanders alone, therefore, he decides to follow the baby elephant with his little brother. Then, they get to reach the place where a group of elephants lie down recklessly. And something bad has happened. The whole family of elephants has died altogether there. 

The things inside their stomachs are……

Wakoongu’s father works for a protection clinic for wild life animals. Dad and his colleagues come to the scene and take dead elephants to somewhere else. They have investigated and found some plastic bags in the stomachs of elephants. The elephants had eaten plastic bag trashes in the wild field as their food. Wakoongu feels pity for this orphan baby elephant and now he begins to consider how we all can protect elephants from these plastic trashes.

Kim Junghee (F) has a great interest in history, so she has written many books related to modern Korean history, such as Chrysanthemum, That Summer at Nogeun-ri and Children of Daechu-ri.
