Book Intro

(English) Who Designs the Future of Shopping?

From UNCG marketing professor Hwang Jiyoung, author of the bestselling books The Future of Retail and Re:Store comes Who Designs the Future of Shopping?, a book for teenagers. It covers a range of topics from the latest corporate branding tactics targeted towards Generation Z, ethical issues in marketing caused by the implementation of technologies like AI and machine learning, changes in offline and online platforms caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing importance of value-conscious consumption. Who Designs the Future of Shopping? introduces a comprehensive collection of insights to teens, who are the consumers, producers, workers, and business owners of the future.

Understanding the shopping habits of the future provides a glimpse into changes in social structures, lifestyles, and labor. Teenagers, who are part of Generation Z, are an important consumer demographic to many companies today. By the time Generation Z enters the workforce, there will be countless new consumption platforms, and many jobs will no longer exist. It is imperative that young people understand where society and industry are headed and prepare accordingly—not only as smart consumers, but as future workers whose accomplishments will shape our world.

In her preface, the author writes, “I hope the perspectives shared in this book will help reader think consciously about their lives as consumers and as the workers of the future.”.” Case studies from around the world are used to explain changes in the retail industry and inform members of Generation Z about the ways their unique characteristics will impact the world as consumers. Who Designs the Future of Shopping? is an indispensable resource for young people and anyone with an interest in economics, management, and marketing, and will offer a clear view into the future of the retail industry.
