Our precious ocean, the value of life

In her childhood by the sea, the author used to fall asleep to the sounds of the waves. Whenever she was scolded by her mother or fought with her sister, she would run to the ocean and be comforted by the stars in the night sky. The ocean was her haven and her playground.

Now as a mother herself, as the love for her own child grows, she feels a growing concern for the threat to maritime life. Plastic waste or marine pollution from oil spills are mostly the cause.

The author began thinking of whales, which are mammals just like us. She decided to create an illustrated story that relays the value of the ocean, the sanctity of life and love through whales which drink breastmilk and breathes air just like humans. After consideration, Jang decided to use watercolors instead of a computer, to depict the amazing colors of the ocean and whales to allow children’s imagination grow.

Preserving nature and co-existing with it

The environment has become the most important issue everywhere. The carbon neutrality act has been passed in Korea and protecting the environment is no longer a choice, but a way for survival. Children must learn from a young age how to live alongside nature and protect it by teaching them how to respect life and our environment. 

Hello, My Whale is not a hard environment lesson but rather leads young readers to realize how we must protect nature and the lives in it through the story of a mother and baby whale in the beautiful waters of the ocean.

소중한 바다, 생명의 소중함

어릴 적 바닷가에서 자란 작가는 파도 소리를 들으며 잠이 들었답니다. 엄마에게 혼이 나거나 언니와 싸웠을 땐 바다로 달려가 위로를 받았고 밤하늘 별을 바라보며 슬픔을 치유 받았습니다. 바다는 안식처이자 놀이터였지요. 

그렇게 자란 작가는 이제 한 아이의 엄마가 되었습니다. 아이에 대한 사랑이 커질수록 바닷속 생명들의 아픔에 대한 걱정도 커졌습니다. 최근 바닷속에 쌓이고 있는 플라스틱 쓰레기나 기름 해양 오염이 그 원인이었죠. 

작가는 우리와 많이 닮은 바다의 포유류, 고래를 떠올렸습니다. 엄마 젖을 먹고 숨을 쉬며 살아가는 고래 이야기를 통해 소중한 바다와 생명의 존엄성, 사랑을 이야기하고 싶어 이 그림책을 그리게 되었다고 해요. 또한 오랫동안 고민하고 정성을 들여 컴퓨터가 아닌 수작업으로 수채화 그림을 그렸습니다. 신비롭고 아름다운 바다와 고래들의 모습을 감각적인 색들의 조화로 잘 묘사해 어린이들에게 풍부한 감수성과 상상력을 길러 줄 것입니다.

자연을 지키며 함께 살아가기

요즘 그 어느 때보다 환경의 중요성이 부각되고 있습니다. 탄소 중립 기본법도 통과되고 이제 환경을 보호하는 일은 생존을 위한 필수적인 일이 되었습니다. 자연 속에서 자연을 지키며 함께 살아가는 법을 배울 수 있도록 아이들에게 어릴 때부터 자연스레 생명 존중, 환경 교육이 이루어져야 할 것입니다. 

『안녕, 나의 고래』는 억지로 환경 교육을 시키기보다는 아름다운 바다 풍경 속 엄마 고래와 아기 고래의 슬프고도 감동적인 이야기를 통해 자연스레 우리의 자연과 소중한 생명을 지켜야 한다는 생각을 일깨워 줄 것입니다.
