(English) The Last Voyage
English explorer Henry Hudson made three exploratory voyages into the Arctic between 1607 and 1609 in search of a sea passage to expedite trade with Cathay (China). The first voyage, started in May 1607, ended when the ship encountered ice near Spitsbergen Island at 80˚. The second voyage, started in 1608, was also ended by ice floes at Nova Zembla Island at 78˚. On his third voyage in 1609, he narrowly escaped with his life after his ship was locked in ice near the Novaya Zemlya archipelago.
His fourth voyage begins in May of 1610, not to seek a Northeast Passage this time, but one to the northwest that would take him north of the Americas. The Discovery makes it into an uncharted bay (Hudson Bay) at 60˚, but the ship is locked in ice and the crew is forced to endure a cruel winter. Although they survive the cold and scurvy, the crew is bitterly divided into two factions, with the captain and the navigator each leading one of the groups.
