진짜에 핵심을 두고 사람의 이야기를 서정적으로 풀어낸 『가짜 인간』은 참 유약한 가운데에서도, 나름대로 뜨겁게 살아가는 사람과 헬라의 모습을 가슴 시리게 펼쳐 보인다. 거짓말로 책임을 회피하는 누나, 자신의 분신을 만들려는 이도, 가짜의 삶에 심취한 닥터 안, 사람들에게서 학습한 선악의 모습을 보이는 헬라. 사람과 헬라는 삶의 굴곡 앞에서 혼란을 겪고, 가면을 쓰면서 자신을 보호해 나간다. 그럼에도 현실은 여전히 껍데기 같고 혼돈스럽기만 하다. 이런 현상은 헬라의 말처럼 마음이라는 것이 불쑥 생각과 행동을 잡아 주며, 가짜 인생을 살고 있지는 않는지 반문하기 때문이다. 

진짜의 삶은 무엇일까? 진짜가 될 수 있었던 기회를 놓친 이도, 누나, 닥터 안은 온기를 지닌 따뜻한 목소리로 말한다. 진짜와 가짜를 구분할 때에는 외형보다는 어떤 정신을 가졌는지가 중요하고, 나 또한 모두를 위한 쪽으로 살아가야 한다고. 그러다 보면 내가 누군가의 마음에 남은 사람이 되고, 내가 혼란하고 비틀거릴 때 그 누군가들이 내 손을 잡아 준다고 말이다. 인생의 버그 같은 상처를 이겨낸 뒤에 새로운 정신이 깃든 이도, 누나, 닥터 안은 헬라와 독자들에게 불완전한 삶이지만 진실에 닿는 삶을 살아가도록 유도한다. 

사람들을 만나면서 자기 자신과 세상을 더 넓고, 더 깊게 직시한 헬라는 긴 여운을 남기는 발걸음을 떼지만 분명 인간적인 사람으로 살아갈 것이다. 반려 인간 헬라가 독자들에게 어떤 자각을 주며 이미 독자의 마음에 남았기에 말이다. 이렇듯 진짜 삶이란 자신도 모르는 사이에 누군가의 마음에 남으며 살아가는 것이리라.
