Book Intro

(English) LIGHTLY

“If I could only cut off the past, then my tomorrow would be freer.”

This is the Grand Prize winning novel of the 12th Munhakdongne Young Adult Literature Award. It tells the story of eighteen-year-old Yu-ri who would like to sever her past and who dreams of becoming independent and how she slowly learns to relate to the people who are close to her. By spending a whole season with the protagonist, readers will reflect on the diverse levels of a relationship; such as, someone you dine with or someone who will make sure you’re dressed warm enough on a cold day. A person whose facial expression you recall vividly after he or she ate the food you cooked for that person. To Be Free makes us reflect on the true definition of being a family—that whether or not you’re related by blood, it is those with whom you can offer a piece of your heart. The novel with its solid and impeccable writing shows how Yu-ri comes face to face with buried emotions and neglected past to lessen the heaviness of her heart and become lighter by connecting with others.
