Series books about a history of western art authored by Chin Jungkwon, a cheerful aesthetician. The Story of Art by Chin Jungkwon was completely published with the last volume Impression since the first publication of Classical Art in 2008, followed by Modernism in 2011 and Latter Period Modernism and Postmodernism in 2013. His writing career spans 10 years.
The author, who introduced the unfamiliar discipline of aesthetics to the public through Aesthetics Odyssey, introduces a new Western art history that combines aesthetics and art history. It looks at the spiritual and cultural context surrounding art, and the aesthetic value system of those days, along with subjects in the existing western art history, including the form and content of art and the change of styles, and thereby, combines ‘the history of western art’ and ‘the principles of western art’. Readers cheered for the new world of arts unfolding across aesthetics and art history, and The Story of Art by Chin Jungkwon has become a steady seller in the field of arts.
The Story of Art by Chin Jungkwon is especially noteworthy in that the Korean author has put together a vast volume of Western art history. It is not common in the West for one author to organize the entire Western art history spanning over 2,000 years from ancient Greece to the present. It is even rarer in Korea. If The Story of Art by Ernst H. J. Gombrich reads the history of art through the spirit of age and art museums 60 years ago, The Story of Art by Chin Jungkwon is significant in that it revived the arts of the past as the arts here and now through the aesthetic sense and the spirit of today. Thanks to this series, we can now look at Western art history from the perspective of here and now.
