Overview

It is the 20th-anniversary edition of the bestseller Aesthetics Odyssey which has introduced the world of aesthetics to Korean society.

Book Intro

Esthetics Odyssey published on January 15, 1994 is the first book that informed Korea of aesthetics and a debut work of Chin Jungkwon, a power writer cum aesthetician, that made him what he is today. As the author confesses, this is a book written with the ‘vigorous intellectual curiosity and the ecstatic joy of knowing new things.’ Also, ‘the admiration or wonder of when I wrote this’ still remains for this book. When aesthetics was hardly known to the public, cheerful aesthetician Chin Jungkwon introduced a new vision of ‘beauty’ and ‘arts’ and a unique aesthetic sense in a unique writing style of talking.

Esthetics Odyssey, which has kept the throne of the steady seller for 20 years with only the readers' word of mouth for publicity, has spread difficult aesthetics to the public by introducing a unique writing style that consists of the history of philosophy and the works of artists three-dimensionally along with the basic knowledge of aesthetics.

This book not only shows how to interpret and criticize arts across the boundaries of various disciplines such as philosophy, psychoanalysis, and semiotics but also explores the magnificent world of beauty by introducing Escher, Magritte, and Piranesi to each volume. Thereby, this book provides a new experience of thought in which the experience of arts leads to philosophical reflection on the world and life. This book, which uniquely unfolds the world of 'beauty' and 'arts' from the unique perspective of the author as if cleaving the blue sky, is still regarded as one of the representative primers to aesthetics and recognized for its cultural value.
