This novel starts from the premise that one day people will start offering break-up services. Lee Ga-eul works as a break-up manager and, like most people in their 20s and 30s, she is skeptical about human relationships. Her attitude reminds us of the universal fear of relationships. Although the story affirms the necessity of break-ups, it urges us to consider ‘what’ we should part with and ‘how’. Ironically, it makes us think about what we should love and how. 

Thirty-year-old Lee Ga-eul does not have a proper full-time job.  In an effort to support her mother who shows symptoms of  gastrointestinal intolerance, Lee lands a position at Dorona Break-up Services. As per its name, the company offers break-up services for clients in all sorts of situations—from lovers who have fallen out of love to people struggling to get rid of  eccentric habits. Ga-eul’s first task is to break up with a woman named Mi-hu on behalf of her boyfriend Seok-won, a second-year resident. However, Mi-hu adamantly refuses to break up with him. Ga-eul is determined to excel at her new job, but her very first tasks is far from easy. To make matters worse, she is given yet another task, which is to separate bookworm Jin-woo from his books. 

People come to Dorona Break-up Services with all sorts of requests—from someone hoping to break up with their lover to a woman who wants a divorce from her husband of 30 years. There are parents who want their primary school kid to part ways with his smartphone, a college student scared of leaving school to enter the tough job market, an office worker who goes to work everyday even though he retired two years ago. Every break-up comes with a story. Gae-ul comes to sympathize with those who do or do not want a break-up. Along the way, she recalls the ‘bad’ break-ups buried deep in her heart and faces her own wounds. 

"누군가 이별을 대신해주는 시대가 올 것이라는 상상력에서 출발한 이 소설은 지금의 2,30대를 대변하는 듯 인간관계에 회의적인 ‘이별 매니저 이가을’을 전면에 내세우면서 관계에 대한 막연한 두려움이라는 보편적 감각을 일깨운다. 하지만 소설은 이별의 필요성에 대해서 긍정하는 한편, 우리가 ‘무엇’과 ‘어떻게’ 이별해야 할지를 고찰해보기를 촉구한다. 아이러니하게도 이것은 우리가 무엇을 어떻게 사랑해야 하는 지를 생각하게 한다.

변변한 직업을 갖지 못한 채 서른이 된 이가을은 위무력증 증상을 보이는 엄마를 부양하기 위해 애쓰다가 ‘도로나 이별 사무실’에 취업하게 된다. 어딘가 수상해 보이는 이곳은 이름 그대로 이별을 대행해주는 사무실로, 사랑이 식은 연인에서부터 괴팍한 습관에 이르기까지, 그야말로 온갖 종류의 이별을 주선하고 완성해주는 일을 하는 곳이다. 가을에게 주어진 첫 번째 임무는 레지던트 2년차 황석원의 의뢰로, 여자친구 강미후에게 이별을 통보하는 일이다. 하지만 미후는 이별을 인정할 수 없다며 강경한 반응을 보인다. 무슨 일이든 해야겠다는 마음으로 입사했지만 첫 번째 임무부터 호락호락하지는 않다. 설상가상, 첫 번째 일을 끝내지도 못했는데 들어온 두 번째 의뢰는 책에 파묻혀 사는 남자 진우에게서 책을 떼어내는 일이다.

도로나 이별 사무실을 찾아오는 사람들의 사정은 실로 다양하다. 연인에게 이별을 통보하려는 사람이나 30년간 함께해온 남편에게 이혼을 대신 말해달라는 사정에서부터, 스마트폰 중독인 초등학생 아들을 스마트폰과 이별 시키려는 부모, 취직이 어려운 시대에 학교를 떠나기 두려워하는 대학생, 10년 가까이 살던 고시원을 떠나는 것을 두려워하는 고시생, 퇴직한 회사에 아침마다 출근하는 직장인 등……. 모든 이별에는 사연이 있기 마련이기 때문일까. 가을은 이별을 원하거나 원하지 않는 사람들을 만나면서 그들의 사연에 조금씩 공감하게 된다. 그러면서 마음 속 깊숙이에 묻어두었던, 스스로 ‘잘’ 이별하지 못했던 상처를 떠올리고 그것과 마주하게 된다."
