Book Intro

Dance Through the Eternal Night

The story of Giselle transforms into a story about students.

Giselle, an innocent young girl from the countryside, falls in love with Albrecht, a nobleman who disguises himself as an ordinary youth. Hilarion, a local man who is in love with Giselle, reveals the true identity of Albrecht. Giselle learns that Albrecht is engaged to marry a noblewoman and falls into despair, which ultimately kills her. As she has died a brokenhearted virgin, her soul becomes part of the Wilis. When Albrecht visits her grave, he is captured by the Wilis, and their queen Myrtha commands Giselle to tempt him to an early death. Instead, Giselle protects the man she loves.

Giselle, the classical romantic ballet masterpiece, deals with a love that transcends death. But the ending is not entirely satisfactory. Giselle is the one who's been betrayed; why must she also be the one to forgive and turn to reconciliation? Aren't we demanding too much from Giselle, all in the name of love? This is the question asked by The Endless Night, which is set in the dance department of an arts high school that is hard at work preparing for a Giselle performance.

One of the ballet teachers dies in a bizarre accident not too long before. She leaves this message: "Dance until you die. Walk into an endless night." Another teacher, Cho Eunji, is subjected to a similar accident but manages to survive. Post-trauma, she murmurs over and over the phrase, "Giselle said she'll kill me." Cho's older brother Cho Eunho, a journalist, begins covering the events at this arts high school to understand what is really taking place. The students who had been rehearsing for Giselle each give interviews to Eunho and talk about their teachers’ accidents and the mysterious and unknown deaths of other young girls.
