Badger's Cookie
It’s okay. You can find answers from failures!
A heartwarming and earnest story that gives courage to children who are about to take their first steps.
How do our children feel when they take on new challenges or have to adjust themselves to a new setting? They may be scared, excited, and nervous, but in the end, they will find a way—though we don’t know if this “way” will be good or bad. Badger’s Cookies, the winner of the Korean Award for Hans Christian Andersen, delivers support and strength to children who are put into unfamiliar situations and helps them find their dreams.
The badger in this book leaves home and steps into society where he now has to engage with other people. How can he protect himself and not get lost in this complicated world? He sets out to find what he can do and gives it a try based on his mother’s advice, “Find what you can do well, or what you can enjoy doing.” The result was terrible. Discouraged, the badger begins to lose confidence. The desert mouse convinces him that he has talent, but he finds it hard to believe. He is scared to take on new challenges. And some animals like the boar make matters worse by looking down on him. But when he bakes cookies, his heart beats fast, which signals to him that he is good at it, and he enjoys it. He has learned from his first failed attempt, so this time, he does not rush and takes enough time to practice hard. The second challenge becomes a huge success.
If you are unsure what to say to children before taking their first step or taking on new challenges, rather than giving a lecture, hand them this book about the adventures of an adorable badger. The simple sentences, impressive characters, and events with a clear causal relationship will foster dreams and love in children’s hearts.
