The protagonist, who once held the position of supreme commander of an empire, gains a reputation eclipsing that of the emperor following a war with the Alliance. Against his wishes, other nobles try to enthrone him as the new emperor. He abandons his honor and name and leaves the fortress by faking his death. He then changes his name and sets off on a journey according to the contents of his deceased wife's journal.
