Les semis de riz sont repiqués, mi mi mi mi puis ils grandissent, ga ga ga ga, le millet des oiseaux poussent également, po po po po, les plants penchent parfois dans le vent mais se relèvent à nouveau, ils prennent une teinte dorée en mûrissant, puis sont coupés, battus. Les grains deviennent de la nourriture pour les oiseaux, la paille du fourrage pour le bétail, et enfin le riz arrive sur notre table. Cet ouvrage illustre joyeusement le cycle de vie du riz. Mais le plus admirable, c’est l’esprit de l’auteur qui arrange avec humour des mots qui ne sont ni des onomatopées ni des idéophones pour exprimer l’ordre de la nature.

Rice gets planted, then it grows, some weeds also grow, it sometimes falls in the wind but is raised up again, becomes gold, then it gets cut, gets threshed, becomes food for the birds and fodder for cattle, and finally becomes rice and comes up on our table. This book shows us the life cycle of rice plants cheerfully. The writer’s wit of playfully arranging words that are neither onomatopoeic nor mimetic and expressing the order of nature is surprising. 

벼가 넘어지면? 뚀뚀뚀뚀뚀. 넘어진 벼를 묶어 세우면? 뼈뼈뼈뼈뼈. 모를 심고, 벼가 자라고, 피도 자라고, 바람에 넘어지고, 일으켜 세우고, 황금빛으로 익어가고, 벼를 베고, 탈곡을 하고, 새도 먹고, 여물도 만들고, 마침내 쌀이 되어 우리 밥상에 올라오는 벼의 한 살이를 유쾌하게 담아냈다. 의성어도 의태어도 아닌 낱말을 말놀이하듯 배치해 자연의 이치를 딱 들어맞게 표현한 작가의 재치가 놀랍다.
