Overview

Is it possible to graduate from childhood and become an adult without committing any crime?

Book Intro

A perfectly divided society is formed, ranging from the stable District 1, where the nation's powerful people reside, to District 9, which is land discarded by the nation due to a riot that occurred in December sixty years ago. This is also a time when analogue means of communication are mostly used. It is not certain if this story takes place in the past or future.

There is Runner Young, who was originally a hoody in District 9 after the December riot but has settled down in District 1, the father, Niece Young, who is the vice minister of education and the chairperson of Prime School who has been continually holding a memorial ceremony for his friend for 30 years, Darwin Young, who is a model student at Prime School, which is the best boarding school in District 1, Leo, an outsider of Prime School who constantly criticizes District 1, and Rumi, who tries to find out the truth about the death of Uncle Jay, who was murdered by a hoody from District 9 at the age of 16. The characters seem to be alive to readers, so much so that readers know even the smallest habits of the characters. They elaborately draw a world that is not this world and this place. The author created this time and space with so much detail that readers find themselves wanting to listen to the songs of Ben Hulk and walk down the walnut tree street. What we should pay attention to is the author's way of showing things. The author does not provide much information all at once. Although the author mainly covers Prime School in District 1, every aspect up to District 9 is drawn, and the small devices that are placed here and there naturally serve as decisive clues according to the author's intention.

The author might have wanted to show, through Darwin, that people talk to themselves in their own voice that others cannot hear. The author might be going further and showing that all humans originated from the past but each human evolves in a direction that is completely new and that he or she does not know him/herself, unlike Nature. The origin of evil by Darwin Young is a process of tracing the missing link of Darwin Young's evolution and is an empirical report on human nature. At the same time, it is a story about here and us. This young adult novel by Park Jiri is the outcome of amazing imagination and features meticulous devices and charming, three-dimensional characters. It will serve as a surprising gift to readers who are yearning for new storytelling.
